As the 2026 college football season approaches, Ohio State is gearing up for a fresh start after a disappointing 2025 campaign. The Buckeyes are determined to replace their 12 departing starters and are in the midst of a rigorous offseason training regimen. With just over 90 days until the season opener against Ball State, the focus shifts to the defensive starters. Here's a breakdown of the projected defensive lineup for the 2026 season, along with my personal insights and analysis.
DEFENSIVE END
Kenyatta Jackson Jr. is poised to become the Scarlet and Gray's top pass rusher, having earned his first starting opportunity last season. His 6.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss demonstrate his potential, and his return for a fifth year indicates a commitment to improvement. However, the departure of Caden Curry leaves a void, and Jackson will need to step up and lead the defense.
Beau Atkinson, a senior with three years of ACC experience, is another option at defensive end. His 2024 performance at UNC was impressive, and he looked more settled in spring practice. While he may start the opening game, the rotation includes Atkinson, sophomore Zion Grady, and Alabama transfer Qua Russaw, all of whom have the potential to contribute.
3-TECH
Eddrick Houston, who started the 2025 season as one of two interior defensive line starters, struggled for much of the year. However, he showed improvement during spring practice and is determined to prove himself. With the talent and potential, Houston can be the player the Buckeyes expect him to be.
John Walker, a former top-100 recruit, is expected to make an impact at nose tackle. After missing the entire 2024 season, Walker had a strong first spring with the Buckeyes. The rotation at defensive tackle includes Walker, James Smith, and Will Smith Jr., ensuring depth and flexibility.
LINEBACKER
Payton Pierce, a junior who played every game as the third linebacker last season, is poised to take over as a starter. His expanded role as a 'throwback Mike linebacker' this spring indicates a significant increase in responsibility. With his experience and proven track record, Pierce is ready to lead the defense from Week 1.
Christian Alliegro, a transfer from Wisconsin, brings versatility and toughness to the linebacker corps. His ability to line up in different spots and rush off the edge makes him a valuable asset. The rotation at linebacker includes Alliegro, Riley Pettijohn, and TJ Alford, ensuring depth and flexibility.
CORNERBACK
Jermaine Mathews Jr., a senior returning for his fourth year, will be the Buckeyes' top corner. He has the talent and leadership to handle the shutdown corner role, which he appeared to excel at earlier in his career. With the departure of Davison Igbinosun, Mathews will need to step up and lead the secondary.
Devin Sanchez, a true freshman who started against Illinois, has the talent and work ethic to become a top corner. His experiences, both good and bad, since arriving on campus, have prepared him for the challenges of the college game. With his potential, Sanchez is expected to make significant strides this season.
SAFETY
Terry Moore, a transfer from Duke, is a solid substitute for the departed Caleb Downs. With 71 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, one sack, six passes defended, four interceptions, and two forced fumbles in 2024, Moore has the talent to make an immediate impact. While his spring performance was quiet, he came on strong at the end and started in the spring game.
Jaylen McClain, a first-year starter last season, will need to raise his game with Downs off to the NFL. He will also become one of the leaders of the Buckeye defense. McClain's comfort in a more diverse role in the spring indicates his readiness to take on more responsibilities.
Earl Little Jr., a transfer from Florida State, is expected to play nickel, replacing Lorenzo Styles Jr. His second-team All-ACC performance, during which he recorded 76 total tackles, two tackles for loss, and four interceptions, makes him a valuable asset. Little's experience and versatility will be crucial to the defense's success.
